Illinois foreclosure filings shot up 29 percent in May compared to the previous month and are 54 percent higher than May 2011, according to data provided by Irvine, California-based RealtyTrac. Illinois has the fifth-highest foreclosure rate nationally.

The discouraging month-by-month figures follow a relatively more encouraging report from the Chciago-based Woodstock Institute that foreclosure filings declined between the end of 2010 and 2011.
