Almost 3,800 homes in the six-county Chicago area went into foreclosure last month, a 10 percent increase from December but down dramatically from a year ago.

The 3,778 homes in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake and Will counties that received default notices last month compared with 3,429 homes that entered foreclosure proceedings in December and 4,528 in January 2012, RealtyTrac said Thursday.

Overall, 11,617 homes in the Chicago area received either a default notice, an auction notice or were repossessed by lenders last month. That compares with 12,442 homes receiving such notices in January 2012, according to RealtyTrac.
