Using HMDA: Evaluating the Quality of Disclosure Data from 1980 to 1982

Summary 

This report consists of studies using data mandated from the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) have been criticized on the grounds that HMDA data are faulty and inaccurate. This paper shows that such criticisms of research using post-1980 date are unwarranted. The recent availability of computerized HMDA data has allowed a comparison of the quality of these data to those in other well-respected data bases – the U.S. Census of Populations and Housing and the Annual Housing Survey.
