Women’s Self Employment Project: Loan Fund

Author: Pogge, Jean

Summary

This report discussed how the Women’s Self Employment Project (WSEP) Loan Fund is a small revolving loan fund that, like the WEDCO Loan Fund, is designed to offer small, short-term loans to women starting their own businesses. There are two ways that borrowers will be able to access the WSEP Loan Fund. Individuals may approach the Fund directly as borrowers or, like Grameen Bank borrowers, they may approach the Fund as members of a peer group. The WSEP Loan Fund is designed to serve as a source of financing for WSEP participants unable to meet their business credit needs through traditional financial institutions. Loans will be small, ranging from $100 to $5,000, short term, and made for specific purposes. Borrowers will be encouraged to return for a second or third loan after the first has been repaid. Equity investments will not be made through the Loan Fund.
