Summary
This publication provides an overview to a series of more detailed reports profiling specific types of community development financial institutions. Over the past two decades, several types of community development financial institutions have been created to address the need for access to financial services and development credit in disadvantaged communities. These institutions use capital and credit to revitalize housing, create and retain jobs, and meet individual credit needs not addressed by traditional financial institutions. The Institute’s Community Development Financial Institutions project, funded by the Ford Foundation, is examining the roles and activities of these institutions, the issues they face, and the types of support and policy needed to sustain them and enable their growth.
