Summary

This paper discussed how the Woodstock Institute has worked to promote reinvestment in distressed urban and rural communities to support the goals of affordable housing and job retention and creation. As part of this work, the Institute held a symposium to examine strategies and policies that address the financing needs of rural small businesses. The symposium was funded by the Ford Foundation and sought to bring together a small but diverse group of participants. The majority of participants represented either alternative capital and credit providers or institutions which focus on policy or program initiatives. Other participants represented institutions which concentrate on technical assistance, academic research, advocacy/organizing or linkages with traditional financing institutions.
