Practitioner’s Workshop on Micro-Enterprise Credit Methodology Summary Report

Authors: Coyle, Mary; Pogge, Jean; and Vindasisu, Julia

Summary

This paper was a discussion on a workshop that was designed to be a discussion of the nuts and bolts of program implementation. Participants were asked in advance to identify the topics in which they were most interested and then were assigned to one of three discussion groups: 1) Loan Screening and Delivery Process: 2) Low-Cost Methods of Servicing Credit Clientele: or 3) Borrower Orientation to Credit Delivery and Training for Loan Fund Administrators, Agents, and Promoters. All micro-credit programs that participated are relatively new programs. Many are working to adapt the group borrowing model that has been so successful overseas to the realities of North American markets and financing. Despite the difficulties caused by the scarcity of resources and overwhelming responsibilities inherent in the start-up phase of program implementation, participants were thoughtfully questioning their own methods and procedures and were eager to learn from each other.
