A Tale of Three Cities: The Distribution of Housing Credit From Regulated Financial Institutions in The Chicago SMSA

Author: Shlay, Anne B.

Summary

This study utilizes census tract level information for all census tracts contained within the six-county region of the Chicago SMSA. Lending distribution patterns are examined at two geographic levels. The first level is the census tract. Chicago SMSA census tracts were grouped into three subregions. These subregions are Chicago’s suburbs, north side area located adjacent to Lake Michigan, including the Loop, and the remainder of Chicago. The lending in these three subregions is examined at the census tract level relative to the housing stock in place in 1980. These lending patterns are shown over time, for each year from 1980-1983.
