From Swords to Plowshares: A Case Study of the CRA Agreement Between Beverly Bank and the Chicago Roseland Coalition for Community Control

Author: Bodie, Matthew

Summary

This case study shows the Community Reinvestment Act at work in a particular community. Through the CRA, a community group was able to secure additional lending from a local bank to revitalize its community. This publication is a companion piece to Making CRA Work for You: A Guide for Community Organizations, published in 1991 by Woodstock Institute. While that manual provides specific information on CRA and step-by-step instructions for utilizing it, this report shows the actual efforts of a community group in securing a reinvestment agreement. While this case shows that dedication and some technical knowledge is needed to effectively utilize the CRA, almost every group can use CRA to bridge the gap between communities and credit. We hope this report will also be useful for bankers. This agreement is a true success story for the bank as well as the community group.
